Artist:  Sonny Rollins

Title:  The Bridge

Date:  1962

Label RCA Victor Records - APL1-0859

Line Up:

Sonny Rollins: sax
Jim Hall: guitar
Bob Crenshaw: bass
Ben Riley: drums
H.T. Saunders: drums

Notes:  The LP was Sonny's return after a surprising three year retirement. Consisting of a few standards as well as a few original pieces Sonny seems to be very content in this piano-less quartet setting. Jim Hall plays some of his usual sensitive guitar lines and seems to help pull the quartet together. Sonny's sax is strong and well placed on all of the tunes. His retirement a thing of the past Sonny was ready to take charge of the future. The cover phot has Sonny superimposed over the bridge and he appears as the giant that he really is. Re-released on CD this is a session worth seeking out.
